Independent Midwife
Co-Creating a Better World.
ROOTS
I was born in Athens and grew up in a bilingual family, having Greek and German as my mother tongues. I also speak English very well. I studied at the German School of Athens.
EDUCATION
I studied Midwifery at University of Applied Health Sciences in Bochum, Germany. During my studies I did a five-month internship at birth centers (Geburtshäuser) Geburtshaus von Anfang an in Vienna and the Geburtshaus Schwabmühlhausen in Bavaria. I was trained in maternity hospitals Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen, Leverkusen Hospital and in Städtisches Klinikum BielefeldI was introduced into community midwifery, participating in homebirths alongside other independent midwives like Teresa Angerer, Andrea Klinger and Eleftheria Dimopoulou.
The title of my Bachelor thesis was “Which parameters influence pregnant women in Germany and Greece in their choice of birthplace? A quantitative cross-sectional study”. I completed my studies by successfully passing the German state midwifery examination (Staatsexamen) and obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery.
FIRST STEPS
I worked in Hamburg for five years as an independent midwife, supporting births at home, in a birth center and in a maternity hospital. Together with three other midwives we founded the midwifery team “zuhause gebären” through which we took care of over 300 planned births at home. I was particularly dedicated to antenatal care and home births, because I believe that every person giving birth has the right to freely decide where and how they want to give birth to their child, provided that there are no health reasons that require special medical care. Midwifery care continued with home visits during the postnatal period, which are subsidized by the German state (up to 36 visits for each family and for as long as needed!).
I participated in Quality Circles of Midwives in Germany, a body ensuring the quality of services of independent midwives, with regular checks, creating networks of communication, exchange of knowledge and continuous education with fellow midwives, but also with doctors and maternity hospitals. There was constant communication with the public health service of Hamburg and thus the inclusion of home births in the digital registration of birth data for the more immediate issuance of the birth certificate was successfully completed. Through the “Child benefit is easy" all families in Hamburg now have access to this service.
My resources, in addition to my studies and professional experience, are a series of international guidelines, seminars and training courses within the framework of which I work.
I am grateful for the knowledge and experiences I gained in Germany, because it is a country where midwives practice the full spectrum of their profession with great support from the National Health System.
PROJECTS
In 2021, I returned to Greece and worked in Athens as an independent midwife. I supported women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period as well as with breastfeeding, while also traveling to other regions of Greece, collaborating with other colleagues to provide midwifery care in the countryside.
In 2020 I created the Logos Maion, the first Greek midwifery podcast, which has gained its own loyal audience. Through it, I seek to highlight issues related to midwifery, childbirth, and sexual and reproductive health, giving space to knowledge, dialogue, and different experiences.
I translated the children's/teenage book from German. Lin and the secret of the cycle Book by Nina Hanefeld (published by oposito), which deals with the onset of puberty, the first period and the management of menstruation. I hope through this translation to contribute to the formation of a new generation of girls who grow up with more knowledge, self-confidence and love for their bodies and with respect for their boundaries. (Article in Marie Claire).
At the same time, I hold the exclusive representation of Silverette® in Greece, a medical device made of silver, designed to relieve irritated nipples and support their healing during breastfeeding.
I collaborated with Aretaeion Hospital and the Metropolitan College, contributing to the practical training of Midwifery students and the transfer of knowledge through clinical practice. At the same time, I wrote informative articles and gave interviews to Greek and German media on issues of obstetrics, pregnancy and reproductive health. I wrote articles, among others, about the frequent breastfeeding difficulties, the planned preparation for a planned cesarean section and them reasons for choosing home birth.
I am a founding member of Association of Independent Midwives of Greece (EAMME), which aims to promote independent midwifery and defend the freedom of choice and rights of women during pregnancy and childbirth.
From 2022 to 2025, I worked as a consultant and external collaborator for the establishment of The Birth Center, the first independent natural childbirth center in Greece. I participated in the development of a more human-centered approach to birth and undertook, among other things, the drafting of the Quality Plan, including policies, procedures, documents and information brochures, in collaboration with the relevant departments of the administration.
Looking back, I feel grateful for everything we created in these five years, for the partnerships that developed and, above all, for the families who trusted me and the fantastic babies who came into this world.
TODAY
In Greece I was confronted with the difficulties of working and trying to create within an environment often characterized by regressive perceptions, lack of institutional support, insecurity and resistance to change towards something wholesome and sustainable. It became clear to me that perseverance and personal effort are not always enough to compensate for the deeper dysfunctions of a system.
In September 2026 I relocated to Switzerland, where I work with the Terra Alta, a natural birth center near Lucerne, within a midwife-centered model of care. I am returning to an environment that allows me to leverage my experience and continue to work according to the values that brought me into midwifery in the first place.
